Sometimes you need coffee, but you don’t have a coffee pot. In a pinch, here’s an easy way to make coffee without a coffee pot.
A couple years ago, Zach and I received a Keurig coffee maker for Christmas. It’s awesome.
The only problem is how expensive the coffee is…and you don’t get a ton of it for the price you pay. One of the ways to mitigate that is to use the reusable filter that comes with most Keurig coffee makers. Which is fine, but I’m not a huge fan of the quality of coffee it makes. Plus it’s such a pain to clean it out after each use (I have trouble getting the grounds out!). It would be much nicer to make a large batch.
Which is why we used to have a regular coffee pot on hand (we keep some coffee grounds in the freezer). Then one morning, we went to get it out of the pantry…and it fell and broke. No more coffee maker.
It’s been a few months since then and we’ve run out of k-cups quite a few times. Yet we still haven’t felt inclined to buy a new “just in case” coffee maker. Three reasons: we don’t want to spend the money, we don’t want it taking up unnecessary room, and we’ve found a way to make large batches of coffee without it.

How to Make Coffee Without a Coffee Pot
- Nut milk bag
- a large sauce pan
- a large bowl
- a teapot, carafe, or pitcher
- fresh coffee grounds
- water
Step 01: Measure out the water you need. Put it in your saucepan and bring it to a boil.
Step 02: For every cup of water you used, add one tablespoon of coffee grounds to your nut milk bag. Lay the grounds in the bottom of a large bowl, but do not put the whole bag in it. Lay the opening of the bag over the rim of the bowl.
Step 03: Pour water over the coffee grounds. Make sure the opening of the bag is not submerged. Let the coffee grounds steep (like tea) for 3 minutes. Stir the bag a little and let it sit for another 3 minutes.
Step 04: Remove the coffee grounds from the bowl and pour the coffee into a teapot, carafe, or pitcher.
Serve and enjoy!
If you want to make an individual cup, you can use a tea strainer and just let it steep in your coffee mug. (By the way, the coffee mug in the photos was a gift from my sister-in-law. You can get one on Amazon!)
I felt like this tasted a little weaker than coffee brewed in a coffee pot would have, but it did the trick! In a pinch, this makes a decent enough cup of coffee. Plus you can make as much as you need!
